Next week, award-winning children’s book author Ame Dyckman will be at Fargo Public Library for a reading and author talk, co-sponsored by the Valley Reading Council. This event will be free, open to the public, and suitable for all ages.
Dyckman, who currently lives in New Jersey, started off her career in 2012 with Boy + Bot, the story of a little boy and a robot who meet in a forest and become friends. Kirkus Reviews said the book “offers pitch-perfect pacing and gentle humor,” while a review in the New York Times described it as the story of “a perfectly adorable, age-appropriate friendship.”
Her latest book, You Don’t Want a Unicorn!, puts a new spin on the classic “Be careful what you wish for” trope. A little boy throws a coin into a well, wishing for a unicorn. His wish is granted, but he soon discovers that unicorns are messy, high-maintenance pets.
Horn Book has described You Don’t Want a Unicorn! as “a crowd-pleaser, complete with cupcake poops and rainbow burps,” along with “a welcoming and unobtrusive gender-nonconforming vibe.”
The many illustrators Dyckman has worked with include Dan Yaccarino (Boy + Bot), K.G. Campbell (Tea Party Rules), Zachariah OHora (Wolfie the Bunny, Horrible Bear!, Read the Book, Lemmings!) and Liz Climo (You Don’t Want a Unicorn!).
Dyckman’s upcoming books are Misunderstood Shark, due to be released in April, and the first two books of her new series, Wee Beasties: Roary the Lion Roars Too Loud and Huggy the Python Hugs Too Hard, both set for release in May. Wee Beasties will be a collection of board books intended for children ages two to five.
Dyckman is known for wearing elaborate costumes for her public appearances, from rabbit ears and cat ears to unicorn horns and hair bows that complement her alternating hair colors.
