This Monday, Moorhead Public Library will give a platform to Mike Wohnoutka, famed author and illustrator of children’s books. Wohnoutka is a native of Spicer, Minnesota and currently lives in Minneapolis.

Wohnoutka graduated from Savannah College of Art and Design with a degree in illustration. Since then, he has illustrated more than 20 children’s books, working with major publishing presses such as Random House, Scholastic Books, Bloomsbury Publishing, and Cricket Magazine Group.

The first book he both authored and illustrated was Little Puppy and the Big Green Monster, which became a Scholastic Book Club Selection and a finalist for the 2015 Minnesota Book Awards. The story centers on a puppy who wishes for a playmate and endeavors to win over a curmudgeonly monster he meets.

The second book he authored and illustrated was Dad’s First Day, also a Scholastic Book Club selection and a finalist for the 2016 Minnesota Book Award. According to Booklist’s review, “First-day-of-school jitters is the subject, and role reversal is the comedy-filled antidote… This clever reversal of confident child with nervous parent is reassuring and hilarious.”

Wohnoutka often visits elementary schools to talk to students about writing and illustration. These talks include drawing demonstrations and PowerPoint presentations with samples that show his creative process.

Media specialist Cheryl S. Lany has described his visit to Parker Elementary School in Elk River, MN as “delightful, displaying a playful spirit, imagination and talent. His love of kids, books and illustrating shines through his presentation.”

Laura Mestler of Creek Valley Elementary in Edina, MN has said, “Mike Wohnoutka does a terrific presentation with students! He captivates their attention at the very beginning and keeps their interest through the entire presentation… He teaches them tricks to draw and he really relates to the kids and lets them in on the secrets of being an artist!”
